As a parent of a child with asthma, you want to ensure that your child is getting the right asthma treatment. And that includes taking the right medication. We've outlined the categories of medications that may be prescribed to your child so you can be more informed about your child's care. Learning more about the types of asthma medications will also help you understand the benefits of ADVAIR 100/50 better.

Medications for sudden asthma symptoms

Rescue inhalers or fast-acting "puffers" are taken only when your child experiences sudden asthma symptoms. They work quickly to open the airways by relaxing airway muscles. But they do not provide long-term asthma control to help prevent future attacks.

Preventative medications

Of course, you want to try to prevent any sudden asthma symptoms from occurring in the first place. Preventative medications are designed to do just that. Some of these asthma medicines treat airway constriction. They help keep the airways open by relaxing the muscles surrounding the airways for up to 12 hours or longer, and they may even prevent airway constriction from occurring. Other medications treat airway inflammation. These asthma medications reduce inflammation (swelling and irritation of the airways).

ADVAIR 100/50 is a preventative* asthma product that treats both main components of asthma—airway constriction and inflammation.

If your child is experiencing symptoms while on an inhaled corticosteroid, ADVAIR 100/50 may help prevent your child's asthma symptoms from occurring in the first place. That's because ADVAIR DISKUS treats the two main components of asthma—airway constriction and inflammation. For many children, optimal therapy requires treatment of both of the main components of asthma.

Important Information about ADVAIR DISKUS
*Prescription ADVAIR won't replace fast-acting inhalers for sudden symptoms and should be taken twice daily.
ADVAIR should not be taken more than twice daily. ADVAIR is for people who still have symptoms on another asthma controller, or who need two controllers. ADVAIR contains salmeterol. In patients with asthma, medicines like salmeterol may increase the chance of asthma-related death. So ADVAIR is not for people whose asthma is well controlled on another controller medicine.

Talk to the doctor about the risks and benefits of treating asthma with ADVAIR. Do not use ADVAIR with long-acting beta2-agonists for any reason. If taking ADVAIR, see the doctor if asthma does not improve or gets worse. Tell the doctor about any heart condition or high blood pressure. Some people may experience increased blood pressure, heart rate, or changes in heart rhythm. Inhaled corticosteroids as well as poorly controlled asthma may cause a reduction in growth rate. The long-term effect on final adult height is unknown. ADVAIR is for patients 4 years and older. For patients 4 to 11 years old, ADVAIR 100/50 is for those who have asthma symptoms while on an inhaled corticosteroid.
