Understand COPD

COPD means Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary (Lung) Disease.  The key words are chronic and obstructive.  Chronic means that it’s been with you a long time.  Obstructive means that airways in the lungs are partly blocked.

COPD includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema , or both.  Either may compromise lung function. If you have COPD, you may find that your breathing has become difficult while doing some of the things you used to enjoy. The good news is there are things you can do to help improve your lung function so you can breathe better.

Exacerbations are a part of COPD. Although you may not have heard the term, most people with COPD periodically suffer from a marked worsening of their COPD symptoms. This can last for a few days and often requires antibiotics, oral steroids, and in some cases, hospitalization.  Doctors call this an exacerbation (ig-zas-er-BAY-shun).  Learn more about exacerbations.
