Tips to Reduce Exacerbations

It is important to help reduce the number of exacerbations.  Here are some steps you can take to help:

  • Avoid people who are sick or have a cold or other respiratory tract infection. If you catch an illness like this, it can trigger an exacerbation.
  • Avoid other triggers like smoke, pollen, and chemical fumes
  • Make sure you get a flu shot every fall.  And ask your healthcare provider whether you need a pneumonia vaccine.
  • Talk to a healthcare provider about ways to help reduce the number of your COPD exacerbations.
  • Take all medicines as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
