Caring for a loved one who has COPD, including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both, can seem a bit overwhelming. Chances are, you may have questions or be looking for guidance to help you better understand this condition. The answers to the questions below may help.

Is COPD treatable?
The good news is that this condition is treatable.

If your loved one has not done so already, he or she should stop smoking. Smoking is the number-one cause of COPD. It is also important for your loved one to talk with his or her doctor about getting the right treatment plan to manage his or her condition.

Is smoking the main cause of COPD?
Smoking is responsible for the vast majority of COPD cases. Cigarette smoke can induce inflammation and directly damage the lungs. It is believed that this inflammation can then lead to COPD.

Smoking cessation is the single most effective—and cost-effective—intervention to reduce the risk of developing COPD.

My doctor told me to give my loved one her medicine as prescribed, even though she's feeling fine. Is this correct?
Yes. It's important to follow her doctor's instructions and have your loved one continue her regular, scheduled treatment. There are lots of ways to remember to take medicine. Try putting it in a visible place, like the nightstand or next to her toothbrush. Please check with the doctor if you have other questions.

Besides monitoring medicine, what else can I do to help my loved one's COPD?
Simple lifestyle changes, such as eating right and exercising, can make a difference. Encourage your loved one to talk to the doctor about a diet and exercise plan that's right for him or her.

Remember:

  • Be supportive and keep a positive attitude
  • Prepare an emergency contact list
  • Make a list of all your loved one's medicines
  • Encourage your loved one to follow his or her doctor's instructions
