Tips to Quit Smoking
One way to try to quit smoking is to join The Committed Quitters Program, a smoking cessation program brought to you by GlaxoSmithKline. You’ll receive a step-by-step plan to help you overcome your own individual barriers to quitting.
There are some general tips that have helped many people quit smoking:
Pick a quit day. Choose a day when you’ll stop smoking and mark it on your calendar.
Clean house. Get rid of all cigarettes, ashtrays, and lighters. Clean the rugs, drapes, and anything else in your house that may smell of smoke. Get your car detailed.
Remind yourself why you want to quit. Think about your reasons to quit. Write them down. Carry them with you. If you want to quit for loved ones, attach a picture of them to your list.
Know your barriers to quitting. Think about what has kept you from successfully quitting before. Make a list and write down how you'll deal with each barrier.
Prevent your cravings to smoke. The best way to beat cravings is to prevent them. Here are some ideas:
- Do deep breathing exercises to keep calm and relaxed.
- Think about when, where, and with whom you’re most likely to smoke. Plan how to deal with those triggers.
- Break your routines. Do your activities:
- - In a different order
- - At different times of the day
- - With other people
- - In different places.
- Avoid long spans of time where you have nothing to do. Keep a book, magazine, or crossword puzzle with you.
Get support. Find people who can help you when you need a boost. Know how to reach them when you need them. If you start losing confidence in your ability to quit, you need more support.
Have a quitting party. On the day you quit, get rid of your cigarettes and celebrate.
Stay upbeat. You can quit! Hundreds of people do it every day. Focus on a positive reminder that can help you quit. Think about a difficult challenge you met in the past, and write yourself the message, “If I could ......., I can quit smoking!”
